Narcan Program

The current Administration has proposed cutting an annual grant worth $56 million that is used to both distribute and teach first responders about how to use naloxone, commonly known as narcan, in the case of an overdose. The grant, which is administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), has been credited with lowering the number of opioid overdose deaths in the United States since its implementation. A report by the CDC showed that between July 2023 and July 2024, overdose deaths in the United States fell by 17%, which has been credited partially to wider access to narcan.
