Medicaid & CHIP
The purpose of Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is to provide free or low-cost health coverage to those who meet the eligibility requirements, including low-income adults, families, children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with disabilities. Medicaid is available in all fifty states and must follow federal guidelines, however, the eligibility requirements, levels of coverage, and costs may differ state by state.
Funding for Medicaid and CHIP is threatened under the proposed budget. The budget would slash $715 billion from Medicaid over the next ten years and would cause 13.7 million people to lose coverage.
